NetWorker® BusinesSuite™ Module for Oracle® |
Table of Contents |
The database Module for Oracle is a BusinesSuite™ option for NetWorker that delivers online data protection for Oracle7™ UNIX databases by providing a seamless connection to the Oracle7 Enterprise Backup Utility (EBU). The BusinesSuite Module is an implementation of the Oracle Tape Backup API, which defines a high-performance, parallel connection between NetWorker and EBU. The database Module and EBU integrate backup and recovery services for Oracle tablespaces, data files, control files, parameter files, and archive redo logs into NetWorker's comprehensive, enterprise-strength storage management solution.
The NetWorker backup server runs the NetWorker administrative software, with a backup device connected to it. Using the BusinesSuite Module, the system running Oracle EBU is configured as a client of the NetWorker server. The backup server software and database server software may run on the same system or separate systems. The database Module is a client-side product, and must reside on the same system as Oracle.
All BusinesSuite Modules are licensed on a per NetWorker client basis, and require a client connection, as well as the appropriate NetWorker client software. The BusinesSuite Module for Oracle software is available for Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX client systems. To protect Oracle UNIX databases with NetWorker, the following four products are required:

Question | Answer |
How is the BusinesSuite Module licensed? | The BusinesSuite Module for Oracle is licensed on a per-NetWorker server, per client OS basis. |
Where do I obtain the Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility? | The Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility is bundled with Oracle 7.3 and up on Solaris and is available on other platforms as a separate CD-ROM free of charge from Oracle Corp. Request it from Oracle Worldwide Technical Support. |
Can I back up my databases over the network? | Certainly! Multiple databases can be backed up "over-the-wire" to a centralized NetWorker backup server, running autochangers or tape drives. |
How are restores and recoveries handled? | Damaged files can be quickly restored from media using the Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility. Recoveries are performed using standard Oracle procedures. |
Does EBU support partial saves? | Yes. Online partial saves are available to the tablespace or datafile level. Tablespaces or datafiles can be interleaved to maximize utilization of high-performance tape devices. Media is tracked automatically by NetWorker. |
Isn't mirroring sufficient protection for my database? | Mirroring doesn't protect you in cases where you want to restore the database to a specific point in time. User errors, application errors, and logical errors are some examples of errors that require point-in-time restores. |
